One Share Per Kid Isn't Generosity. It's a Billboard.
Elon Musk says he'll give one SpaceX share to every child in America next year. At around $146 a share, that's roughly $10.5 billion. Headlines call it historic. President Trump is cheering, since it boosts his signature Trump Accounts program.
Let's do the math the press release skipped. Musk owns about 6.4 billion SpaceX shares. Giving away 72 million barely dents his pile. It's like a millionaire tossing out about one percent of his wealth and getting a national parade for it.
And look at what he gets back: 72 million future shareholders raised to root for SpaceX, a fresh political win for an old ally, and his name in every household. That's not charity. That's the cheapest brand-loyalty campaign ever run.
The details are still fuzzy too. Musk hasn't said whether the shares would go through Trump Accounts or whether kids could sell them. A gift you can't touch for years is mostly a gift to the giver's image.
The other side: Supporters argue that $10.5 billion is $10.5 billion, motives aside, and that giving every kid a real stake in the market could build financial literacy and wealth that families never had.
